Serenade

Vom bunten Flatterlicht emporgeschreckt
Aufglühn,wie aus versteintem Traum geschreckt
Die Marmorschlösser am Canale grande.

Serenade
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The waves surged past dreamily,
In the clear aether floated the moon's boat,
We stood upon a weathered balcony
High above the mighty curve of the Rialto [Bridge].
The torches glowed, the rockets flew,
And majestically upon the dark path there came
A singing, light-coloured great swan,
Coursing toward us upon the gently moving waterway.
Like fireflies, swarming in the glow,
Barque upon barque floats, purling through the water,
And, rejoicing, the people call greetings from bank to bank.
Startled by the colourful, flickering lights,
The marble palaces along the Grand Canal come aglow
As if shocked out of a petrified dream.
