You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Wenn meine Mutter hexen könnt

Language: German (Deutsch)

Wenn meine Mutter hexen könnt,
Da müßt sie mit dem Regiment,
Nach Frankreich, überall mit hin,
Und wär die Marketenderin.
Im Lager, wohl um Mitternacht,
Wenn Niemand auf ist als die Wacht,
Und Alles schnarchet, Roß und Mann,
Vor meiner Trommel [säß']1 ich dann:
Die Trommel müßt' eine Schüssel sein,
Ein warmes Sauerkraut darein,
Die Schlegel Messer und Gabel,
Eine lange Wurst mein [Sabel]2,
Mein Tschako wär' ein Humpen gut,
Den [füll']3 ich mit Burgunderblut.
Und weil es mir an Lichte fehlt,
Da scheint der Mond in mein Gezelt;
Scheint er auch auf [Franzö'sch]4 herein,
Mir fällt doch meine Liebste ein:
Ach weh! Jetzt hat der Spaß ein End!
- Wenn [nur]5 meine Mutter hexen könnt!

Il Tamburino

Language: Italian (Italiano) after the German (Deutsch)

Se mia madre sapesse fare magie,
verrebbe col reggimento in Francia,
dappertutto al suo seguito,
e sarebbe la vivandiera.
Al campo, proprio a mezzanotte,
quando nessuno è sveglio tranne la sentinella,
e tutto russa, cavalli e uomini,
starei seduto davanti al tamburo:
il tamburo sarebbe una scodella,
con dentro una calda zuppa di crauti,
le bacchette coltello e forchetta,
una lunga salsiccia la mia sciabola;
il mio colbacco sarebbe un bel boccale
che riepmpirei di vino di Borgogna.
E se non c'è abbastanza luce,
splende la luna nella mia tenda;
anche se splende alla francese,
io penso la mia bella:
ahimè, ahimè! Ora finisce il gioco! -
Se solo mia madre sapesse fare magie!
