Beim Weidenbaum, im kühlen Tann, da flattern die Dohlen und Raben, da liegt ein blonder Rittersmann unter Blättern und Blüten begraben. Dort ist's so lind und voll von Duft, als ging ein Weinen durch die Luft! O Leide, weh! O Leide! Ein Spielmann zog einst des Weges daher, da sah er ein Knöchlein blitzen; er hob es auf, als wär's ein Rohr, wollt' sich eine Flöte draus schnitzen. O Spielmann, lieber Spielmann mein, das wird ein seltsam Spielen sein! O Leide, weh! O Leide! Der Spielmann setzt die Flöte an und läßt sie laut erklingen: O Wunder, was nun da begann, welch seltsam traurig Singen! Es klingt so traurig und doch so schön, wer's hört, der möcht' vor Leid vergehn! O Leide, Leide! "Ach, Spielmann, lieber Spielmann mein! Das muß ich dir nun klagen: Um ein schönfarbig Blümelein hat mich mein Bruder erschlagen! Im Walde bleicht mein junger Leib, mein Bruder freit ein wonnig Weib!" O Leide, Leide, weh! Der Spielmann ziehet in die Weit', läßt' überall erklingen, Ach weh, ach weh, ihr lieben Leut', was soll denn euch mein Singen? Hinauf muß ich zu des Königs Saal, hinauf zu des Königs holdem Gemahl! O Leide, weh, o Leide!

Là presso il salice, in mezzo al fresco bosco, dove svolazzano cornacchie e corvi neri, un biondo cavaliere giace sepolto tutto ricoperto da fogliame e fiori. Là spira un soave profumo da ogni canto E pare che per l'aria si diffonda un pianto! Oh sventura, sventura! Un menestrello capitò in quel posto E vide un ossicino biancheggiare; come se fosse una canna prese a intagliarlo tosto per farne un flauto con il quale suonare. O menestrello, menestrello caro, ne verrà fuori un suono molto raro! Oh sventura, sventura! Il menestrello il flauto alle labbra accosta e lascia che ne venga fuori il suono: O meraviglia, o quale melodia mesta, simile a un canto doloroso e strano! Risuona così triste ma di tale incanto Che chi lo ascolta non può che sciogliersi in pianto! Oh sventura, sventura! "Ah, menestrello, menestrello caro! Per mezzo tuo risuona il mio canto amaro: da mio fratello, per un fiore colorato, io venni brutalmente assassinato! A disfarsi nel bosco il mio giovane corpo resta E mio fratello una splendida donna conquista!" Oh sventura, sventura! Dappertutto il menestrello si aggira, lasciando che risuoni questo canto, Ahimè, ahimè, mia gente cara, cosa mai vi racconta questo lamento?
