Wenn über'm Berg der Abendstern
Uns zuruft: Legt euch nieder,
Und mein Gespann, vom Felde fern,
Ermüdet kehret wieder;
Am Bache dort, wo Birkenzweig
Tauperlen streut hernieder,
Seh ich an seinem Blütenrand
Dich, mein Herzliebchen, wieder.

Und Gruft und Schlucht um Mitternacht
Durchzog ich ohne Zagen,
Wenn mir am Ziel dein Auge lacht
Mit freudigem Behagen.
Und wär die Nacht auch noch so wild,
Könnt mich mein Fuß kaum tragen:
Es müsste, stünd am Quell dein Bild,
Herz an Herze bald schlagen.
