Fahr' wohl
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ich seh' mein Lieb' im Traume,
Leuchtend und thränenklar;
Im weißen Mondesstrahle
Glänzet ihr dunkles Haar.
Wie fromm der wehende Schleier
Die liebe Stirn umgiebt!
Ihr süßen, weinenden Augen,
Ich fühle, daß ihr mich liebt!
Fahr wohl, so spricht sie traurig
In klagender Melodie;
Ich rufe sie laut beim Namen,
Ich sinke vor ihr auf's Knie.
Ich küsse ihr bebend die Hände, --
Da bin ich aufgewacht . . .
Ein Schluchzen, -- Todtenstille, --
Und rings die eisige Nacht.

Farewell
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I see my beloved in a dream,
Radiant and clear through tears;
In the white beams of the moon
Her dark hair gleams.
How her veil piously
Swirls about her dear brow!
You sweet, weeping eyes,
I feel it that you love me!
Farewell, thus she speaks sadly
In a lamenting melody;
I call her by name loudly,
I sink to my knees before her.
Trembling, I kiss her hands, --
At that I wakened . . .
A sobbing, -- deathly stillness, --
And round about the icy night.
