Es lief ein scheues Reh im Walde
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Es lief ein scheues Reh im Walde,
Von ferne kam des Kuckucks Schrei,
Da strich's mit großen, stillen Augen
Auf schmalem Pfad an uns vorbei.
Wir aber schritten, wie zwei Kinder,
In selgem Staunen hinterdrein,
Durch junges Laub und Blüthenzweige
Bis tief ins Märchenland hinein.
Und wie wir uns zurückgefunden,
Wir wissen's beide heut' nicht mehr --
Es flog auf jenen schwülen Wegen
Ein Engel leuchtend vor uns her.

A shy deer ran in the forest
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A shy deer ran in the forest,
From far away came the cuckoo's call,
Then, with great, quiet eyes [the deer]
Brushed past us on the narrow path.
But like two children we strode
After it in blissful marvelling,
Through young foliage and blossom boughs
Deep into the land of fairy-tales.
And how we found our way back,
We both do not know anymore today --
Upon those sultry pathways
An angel flew shining before us.
