Daß Musik das Haus umschlich?
Nacht war schwer und ohne Schein,
Doch der sanft auf hartem Stein
Lag und spielte, das war ich.

Was ich konnte, sprach ich aus:
"Liebste du, mein Alles Du!"
Östlich brach [ein]1 Licht heraus,
Schwerer Tag trieb mich nach Haus,
Und mein Mund ist wieder zu.

Non la sentivi allora,
la musica che in casa penetrava come un mormorio?
Tutt'intorno la notte era greve ed oscura,
ma chi sedeva mite sopra un pietra dura
là fuori a suonare, quello ero io.

Ciò che potevo, lo dicevo allora:
"Sei tu il mio tutto, la mia sola amata!"
Poi ad oriente comparve l'aurora
il duro giorno mi spinse in casa ancora
e la mia bocca fu di nuovo muta.
