J'ai vu sur pied la dernière rose de l'été
Elle était rouge, comme si elle pouvait saigner ;
Alors en frissonnant, je dis en passant :
« Être si avancé dans la vie, c'est être près de la mort ! »

Il n'y avait pas un souffle en ce jour torride,
Juste le léger sillage d'un papillon blanc ;
Pourtant, même si le battement de ses ailes
Remuait à peine l'air, elle le ressentit et mourut.
