Es weht der Wind so kühl, entlaubend rings die Äste, Er ruft zum Wald hinein: Gut Nacht, ihr Erdengäste! Am Hügel strahlt der Mond, die grauen Wolken jagen Schnell übers Tal hinaus, wo alle Wälder klagen. Das Bächlein schleicht hinab, von abgestorbnen Hainen Trägt es die Blätter fort mit halbersticktem Weinen. Nie hört ich einen Quell so leise traurig klingend, Die Weid am Ufer steht, die weichen Äste ringend. Und eines toten Freunds gedenkend lausch ich nieder Zum Quell, er murmelt stets: wir sehen uns nicht wieder! Horch! plötzlich in der Luft ein schnatterndes Geplauder: Wildgänse auf der Flucht vor winterlichem Schauder. Sie jagen hinter sich den Herbst mit raschen Flügeln, Sie lassen scheu zurück das Sterben auf den Hügeln. Wo sind sie? ha! wie schnell sie dort vorüberstreichen Am hellen Mond und jetzt unsichtbar schon entweichen; Ihr ahnungsvoller Laut läßt sich noch immer hören, Dem Wandrer in der Brust die Wehmut aufzustören. Südwärts die Vögel ziehn mit eiligem Geschwätze; Doch auch den Süden deckt der Tod mit seinem Netze. Natur das Ewge schaut in unruhvollen Träumen, Fährt auf und will entfliehn den todverfallnen Räumen. Der abgerißne Ruf, womit Zugvögel schweben, Ist Aufschrei wirren Traums von einem ewgen Leben. Ich höre sie nicht mehr, schon sind sie weit von hinnen; Die Zweifel in der Brust den Nachtgesang beginnen: Ists Erdenleben Schein? - ist es die umgekehrte Fata Morgana nur, des Ewgen Spiegelfährte? Warum denn aber wird dem Erdenleben bange, Wenn es ein Schein nur ist, vor seinem Untergange?

Le vent froid souffle, dépouillant les branches alentour, Il crie dans la forêt: bonne nuit, vous les hôtes de la Terre! Près de la colline la lune luit, les nuages gris courent S'échappant vite de la vallée où gémissent toutes les forêts. Le ruisselet se faufile vers le bas, sortant des bois agonisant Il emporte les feuilles avec des pleurs à demi étouffés. Je n'avais jamais entendu une source si douce et si triste, Sur la rive se dresse un saule qui tord ses branches souples, Évoquant le souvenir d'un ami mort, j'écoute en-bas La source murmurer sans cesse : nous ne nous reverrons pas ! Soudain on entend dans les airs un babil cancanant : C'est la fuite des oies sauvages devant l'horreur de l'hiver, De leurs ailes rapides elles chassent l'automne derrière elles, Hagardes, elles abandonnent la mort sur les collines. Où sont-elles ? ah ! Comme là-bas leur trait est rapide Devant la pleine lune et, vite invisible, a déjà disparu ; Leurs voix prémonitoires se font encore entendre Et suscitent la mélancolie dans le cœur du voyageur. Les oiseaux se dirigent vers le sud avec un caquetage pressé ; Mais le filet de la mort recouvre aussi le sud. La nature discerne l'éternel dans des rêves agités, Elle sursaute et fuit les espaces où règne la mort. Le cri déchirant des oiseaux migrateurs en vol Est l'exclamation confuse du rêve d'une vie éternelle. Je ne les entends plus, ils sont déjà loin d'ici ; Commencent alors les doutes dans les chants de la nuit : La vie terrestre est-elle une apparence ? Ou bien juste Une fata morgana inversée, trace dans un miroir de l'Éternel ? Pourquoi alors craindre la vie terrestre, Quand elle n'est qu'une apparence devant sa fin.
