Ganz wie er möchte, sein?
-- In langer Nacht bedacht' ich mir's, und mußte sagen, nein!
 
So kann ich niemands heißen auf der Erde,
Und niemand wäre mein?
-- Aus Finsternißen hell in mir aufzückt ein Freudenschein:
 
Sollt' ich mit Gott nicht können sein,
So wie ich möchte, Mein und Dein?
Was hielte mich, daß ich's nicht heute werde?
 
Ein süßes Schrecken geht durch mein Gebein!
Mich wundert, daß es mir ein Wunder wollte sein,
Gott selbst zu eigen haben auf der Erde!

Comme il le souhaite ?
Pendant la longue nuit j'y ai pensé et je dois répondre : non !

Ainsi je ne peux appartenir à personne sur terre,
Et personne ne peut être mien ?
De l'obscurité, en moi, toute claire en moi une flamme de joie jaillit :

Ne pourrais-je pas être avec Dieu,
Comme je le voudrais, moi et Toi ?
Qu'est-ce qui m'en empêcherait aujourd'hui ?

Une douce terreur parcourt mes os !
Je m'émerveille que cela soit une merveille pour moi,
D'avoir Dieu lui-même pour moi sur terre !
