Der Alte

Nun steh ich über Grat und Kluft
In abendlichen Rosen
Und höre durch die klare Luft
Das Leben tief vertosen.

Ein Adler rauscht ins Tal hinab,
Wo meine Toten schlafen,
Was ich geliebt dort unten hab,
Weiß ich in sicherm Hafen.

Und bin nun über Leid und Zeit
Und meinen Sternen näher
Und schaue in die Ewigkeit,
Ein stillgemuter Späher.

Durch eine selige Bläue schwimmt
Ein Nachen da herüber,
Naht, neigt den schwanken Bord und nimmt
Sanft schaukelnd mich hinüber.

La vie rugir tout au fond.

Un aigle se précipite en bas dans la vallée,
Où mes morts dorment.
Ce que j'ai aimé là en-bas,
Je sais qu'il est dans un port sûr.

Et maintenant je suis au-dessus de la douleur et du temps
Et plus près de mes étoiles
Et je regarde dans l'éternité,
Un éclaireur à l'esprit tranquille.

À travers un bleu béni flotte
Une barque vers moi,
Elle approche, son bord oscillant se penche et elle
M'emporte en se balançant doucement.
