Es ist nicht Selbstsucht und nicht Eitelkeit, was sehnend mir das Herz grabüber trägt; was mir die kühngeschwungne Brücke schlägt, ist wohl der Stolz, der mich vom Staub befreit. Sie ist so eng, die grüne Erdenzeit, unendlich aber, was den Geist bewegt! Wie wenig ist's was ihr im Busen hegt, da ihr so satt hier, so vergnüglich seid! Und wenn auch einst die Freiheit ist errungen, die Menschheit hoch wie eine Rose glüht, ihr tiefster Kelch vom Sonnenlicht durchdrungen: Das Sehnen bleibt, das uns hinüberzieht, das Nachtigallenlied ist nicht verklungen, bei dessen Ton die Knospen sind erblüht!
