[ Add setting to List ]

Nymphs and shepherds

Set by Henry Purcell (1658/9 - 1695), "Nymphs and shepherds" [ SATB chorus a cappella ], arranged by W. McNaught [Sung Text]

Note: this setting is made up of several separate texts.

Nymphs and shepherds, come away.
In the groves let's sport and play,
For this is Flora's holiday,
Sacred to ease and happy love,
To dancing, to music and to poetry;
Your flocks may now securely rove
Whilst you express your jollity.
Nymphs and shepherds, come away.

Twine ye garlands red and white,
Pipe and dance till fall of night,
Then bring ye torches flaming bright,
Thus on the eve of good Saint John,
With music, and dancing keep we holy day.
So hand in hand in couples go,
And pass the time in jollity.
