Ich bin der Junge - bin nicht alt, ich flattre noch unstät im Leben- und hierher bald, und dorthin bald treibt mich ein unerklärbar Streben. Ja, wenn des Jagdhorns Klang erschallt, und bey'm Pokal am frohen Mahle und vor der Maid im Blumenthale- da fühl' ich wohl, ich bin nicht alt. Ich bin der Alte- bin nicht jung, ich halte fest, was ich erkohren, im Lebenstanz, im Todessprung geht nicht die alte Traum verloren. Ja, wenn des Geistes stiller Schwung erfasst des Glaubens Siegerbäute und wenn ich steh an Freundes Seite, da fühl ich wohl, ich bin nicht jung. Ich bin nicht jung, ich bin nicht alt, nicht jung genug, nur zu entbrennen mit jugendlicher Allgewalt, weil deine Lippen sanft mich nennen. Und auch nicht alt genug, um kalt die Engelsseele zu durchschauen, wo Lieb' und Unschuld Tempel bauen. Nun sag' dir selbst, ob jung, ob alt?
