Ich bin kein Freund der Etikette, sie passt für Geck und Höfling nur, und wenn ich meinen Willen hätte, vertilgt' ich ihre letzte Spur. Ich bin kein Freund der Etikette, sie war von je der Wahrheit Feind, der unter schmeichelnd sanfter Glätte verbirgt, wie falsch sein Herz es meint. Und doch ein Freund der Etikette, wenn auf der Flasche treu und wahr sie nennet die geweihte Stätte, die meinen Nektar mir gebar. Ich bin ein Freund der Eitkette! Und beugt' ich ehemals mich nie: Mit jedem Höfling um die Wette beug' ich vor „Rauental“ das Knie. Und „Marcobrunn“, die Etikette zieht mächtig mich zum Gnadenquell, zu dem ich aus der Not mich rette und trinke Herz und Auge hell
Note provided by Johann Winkler: This text can only be understood if one knows the ambiguity of the word "Etikette": "Die Etikette" on one hand means the canon of rules of polite behaviour in society, on the other it means the label put on bottles of liquor, especially wine (though "Das Etikett" is preferable with this meaning).
