by Andreas Tscherning (1611 - 1659)

Demut ist allen Menschen gut
Language: German (Deutsch)
O Mensch, im ganzen Leben
Sei stets beflissen,
Der Demut nachzustreben
Mit Händ' und Füßen.

Was bringet dir dein Stutzen?
Vergebne Sachen.
Gott kann der Menschen Trutzen
Bald mürbe machen.

Willst du den Nächsten puchen?
Es kann sich wenden.
Du musst noch Hilfe suchen
Von seinen Händen.

Meinst du, dass jeder werde
Vor dir sich neigen?
Du stürzest dich zur Erde,
Und andre steigen.

Lacht dir das blinde Glücke,
Bist gross im Lande?
Durch Demut halt' zurücke
Bei hohem Stande.

Wer wahre Demut übet,
Soll Segen haben,
Denn Gottes Auge liebet
Der Demut Gaben.
