Du fragst, warum uns nachts allein begrüßt der Sterne Licht,
warum es dann verbleicht, wenn neu der junge Morgen bricht?
Warum scheint uns im Dunkeln nur
des Jenseits schönste Strahlenspur?
Du fragst, warum?
Mein Kind, weil uns in Schmerz und Nacht
am Nächsten Gottes Aug' bewacht.

Du fragst, warum am Himmel fern das Wölklein weiter flieht,
warum die Sonne selbst, so mild, im Flug vorüber zieht?
Warum der Duft empor sich schwingt,
warum die Welle weiter dringt?
Du fragst, warum?
Weil alles, was da lebt und webt,
nach einer bess'ren Heimat strebt.
