by Rudolph von Beyer (1810 - 1850), as Rupertus

Kurze Lieb'
Language: German (Deutsch)
Die Post, die Post, es tönt das Horn,
vier Rosse dampfen brausend vorn;

die Post, die Post fliegt schnell daher,
doch d'rin war alles öd und leer.

Kein freundlich Aug', kein Liebesgruß,
kein froher Ruf, kein Händekuss;

die Post jagt durch den Winterwald,
im Tale fern das Horn erschallt.

Am Kreuzweg saß ein Mägdlein still,
in ihren Schoß ein Brieflein fiel.

Des Siegels Schloss erbrach die Hand,
ein Tränlein hing am Busenband.

Der Liebste schrieb, wie's mancher tat:
„Leb wohl, leb wohl, ich bin Soldat!

Ich bin Soldat, trag' Waff' und Wehr,
du siehst mich nie und nimmermehr!“

Doch kaum verklang des Hornes Ton,
hat ihn die Maid vergessen schon.
