O, vore hvar maska jag knyter

O, vore hvar maska jag knyter 
en snara att fånga hans sinn! 
O, vore hvart ord jag sjunger 
en kastrem kring irrande tankar! 
Men ack, förr gillras vinden 
af nätets glesa garn, 
och förr kommer skogens skyggaste 
älg att lyssna till Vainos sång.

O jag binder blott för den guldröda rör, 
som lystet följer i vågen de blågrönskimrande 
sländornas lek öfver solblanka sel, 
jag binder för silfverlaxen, 
som trotsig och stark plöjer 
sin stråt genom forsars kokande snö.

Men ingen lyssnar till Vainos sång, 
endast moarnas dofva genljud svara, 
gastarna dansa, de döda ropa! 
O, vildmar, vildmark, 
hvar gömmer du min vän?
