Die Wirtin
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wilder Lärm tönt in der Schenke,
[wer wollt' heut' nicht]1 fröhlich sein,
da zur Stadt, der reichgeschmückten,
zog des Festes Jubel ein.

Freut des Lebens euch, ihr Brüder!
schallt ein kräft'ger Männersang,
und die vollen Gläser läuten
d'rein mit lustig hellem Klang.

Aber droben, weh', im Sterben
liegt des Wirtes junge Frau,
erst vor Kurzem noch so blühend
wie die Ros' im Morgentau.

Und die frohen Klänge dringen
zu dem Sterbebett hinauf;
bitter lächelnd schlägt die Kranke
einmal noch die Augen auf.

Freut des Lebens euch! schallt's wieder,
[allsolang]2 das Lämpchen glüht;
droben aber in der Kammer
eine Rose lag verblüht.
