Zu spät

Es war in einer Sommernacht,
da wärmer Herz zum Herzen drang,
da durch der Blüten duft'ge Pracht
zog sehnend Nachtigallensang,

da durch das dunkle Laubgezelt
das Mondlicht glänzte still hervor,
in unbegrenzter Sternenwelt
der Blick sich träumerisch verlor,

da glomm in deines Auges Grund
verklärt mir deiner Seele Licht,
da wogt' es in mir, doch mein Mund,
er fand die rechten Worte nicht.

Der Augenblick ging schnell dahin,
und nimmermehr kehrt er zurück,
und nimmer will's mir aus dem Sinn:
Was du verlorst, war all dein Glück!
