by Joost van den Vondel (1587 - 1679)

Toen Narcis het water kliefde
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Toen Narcis het water kliefde,
Met de straelen van zijn oogen,
Hy op zijnen schijn verliefde,
        En, van minnegloet bewogen,
Om te blusschen den waterbrant,
Riep: ay troume toch hant aen hant.

Zijne hant, zoo blank en teder
Bood hy aen den schyn op trouwe,
Die bood hem de hant ook weder:
Doch vergeefs, dies hy, vol rouwe,
Schreide: waerom versmaetge my,
Die u vierigh uit liefde vry.
