by Umberto Poli (1883 - 1957), as Umberto Saba

Ceneri
Language: Italian (Italiano)
Ceneri
di cose morte, di mali perduti,
di contatti ineffabili, di muti
sopiri;

vivide
fiamme da voi m'investono nell'atto
che d'ansia in ansia approssimo alle soglie
del sonno;

e al sonno,
con quei legami appassionati e teneri
ch'ànno il bimbo e la madre, ed a voi ceneri
mi fondo.

L'angoscia
insidia al varco, io la disarmo. Come
un beato la via di paradiso,
salgo una scala, sosto ad una porta
a cui suonavo in altri tempi. Il tempo
ha ceduto di colpo.
                                    Mi sento,
con i panni e con l'anima,
in una luce di folgore; al cuore
una gioia si abbatte vorticosa
come la fine.
                         Ma non grido.
                                                   Muto
parto dell'ombre per l'immenso impero.
