Me voilà condamné par la bêtise humaine
A subir tristement le plus horrible sort...
Etre raillé par tous au milieu de la scène,
Et vivre chaque jour dans la pire des morts.
Rire des pleurs d'autrui! À force de souffrance,
Rire, rire des pleurs... et pleurer quand on rit
N'avoir jamais connu les joujoux de l'enfance,
Et connaître, à vingt ans, l'horreur de qui vieillit.

N'avoir jamais aimé, tout en aimant la vie,
L'amour et la beauté, la gloire et la lumière...
N'avoir jamais aimé!...et —de peur qu'on en rie
Ne pouvoir plus aimer, ne pouvoir que se taire.
Attendre, navrément, la fin de son supplice,
Au bagne ensorcelant des âmes sans péché,
Et voir punir en soi, comme un forfait du Vice,
Le seul crime commis - LE CRIME D'ÊTRE NÉ!..
