Kong Christian stod paa Slotsholmens Grund
med sin mægtige Stok i Haand,
han stirrede hvast paa det stride Sund,
et Billed steg frem for hans Aand:

Paa Holmen en Børs i “hans egen Stil”
over Strømmen en Bro han saa
og dèr – i hans Øjne lyste et Smil –
en By fuldfærdig den laa.

Vel var det en Fæstning mod Fjendevold,
dog ej ene det: En Havn,
en Handelsstad med Accice og Told
en By med hans eget Navn.

Mikkel Vibe bygged den første Gaard
og flere sig rejste i Hast,
i grønne Kanaler Aar efter Aar
fløj farvede Vimpler fra Mast.

Mellem Havnens muntre blaanende Strøm
og Voldgravens vuggende Siv,
der ligger nu Byen – en Fortidsdrøm
med Nutidens larmende Liv.

Og Byen har arvet Kongens Humør,
er ung trods de tre Hundred’ Aar, –
der ymtes vel om at Idyllen dør,
hvis friere Rum den faar.

Lad snakke hvem vil – frit ud Du dig fold:
Thi Drømmen tilbage bli’r,
saalænge Du ejer din grønne Vold,
og “Frelserens” dejlige Spir.
