Solvejge

Lig fjorden, som stille i måne-skin drømmer,
ung Solvejges mørke-blå øje det svømmer 
i tårer. Og hjertet det banker
af ømhed og længsel,
lig bølgen mod kyst --
misunder i fængsel 
de fri-fødte tanker,
som fløj til den elskedes bryst.

Ved stranden hun lytter; men natten gen-lyder
så fjernt ud fra havet, som larmer og bryder 
mod skæret. En hav-frue synger
der ude sin smerte 
med smeltende klang.
Når længselen tynger
for tungt på et hjerte,
det elsker en sorrig-fuld sang.
