Ihre Augen
Language: German (Deutsch)
In manches Auge sah das meine
Und manches blickte hold zurück;

Und fort der Liebesgötter Schaar;
Der lose Flüchtling liegt gebunden,
Ihm strahlt ein einzig Augenpaar.

Sei glücklich, Freund, und nun erzähle,
In welcher Farb' es siegreich spricht! --
Aus solchen Augen strahlt die Seele,
Der Augen Farbe weiß ich nicht.

Confirmed with the novel by Daniel Lessmann, Die Heidenmühle: Ein Roman von Daniel Lessmann, erster Theil, Berlin: Vereins-Buchhandlung, 1833. Appears in Dreizehntes Kapitel: Die gelungene Versöhnung, pages 189 - 190. Because the poem appears in a novel without attribution, there's a possibility is is a quotation by an unknown author. The poem does not seem to appear in Lessmann's poetic output.
