Two songs , opus 12b

by William Baines (1899 - 1922)

1. Oh! the flowers of springtime
 (Sung text)

Language: English
Oh the flowers of springtime
The fairest of the year
After the gloom of the Winter
How glorious they appear

The daffodils tall and golden
Sway by the rippling brook
While the modest little violet
hides in her mossy nook

The primrose covers the corpses
With a carpet of amber hue
In nestles beside the streamlet
And clothes the wood anew

The buttercups turn the meadows
To a shimmer cloth of gold
Whilst the humble little daisy
Her petals doth unfold

Of these flowers of springtime
We would always like you there
For after the gloom of Winter
The fairer you appear

But now you'll soon be fleeting.
Summer flowers will bloom in your stead
But we ne'er shall forget the beauty
As you grew on your mossy bed.

2. The grenadier's goodbye
 (Sung text)

Language: English
Here they halted here once more
Hand form hand was rent;
Here his voice above the roar
Rang and on they went;
Yonder out of sight they crossed
Yonder died the cheers
One word lives where all is lost:
"Forward, Grenadiers!"
This alone he asked of fame
This alone of pride:
Still with this he faced the flame
Answered Death and died
Crest of battle sunward tossed
Song of the marching years
This will live though all be lost:
"Forward, Grenadiers!"
