Two songs for soprano or tenor voice, violin and piano , opus 59

by Arthur Foote (1853 - 1937)

1. Love is a bubble  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
Love is a bubble,
Love is a trouble,
Love is a sigh,
And love is a grin.
Love is sweet honey,
Love is cold money,
Love is a lie,
And love is a sin.

Love is a jig --
  So tread you a measure;
Love is a dirge --
  So fill you with grief;
Love is bright wine --
  To quicken your pleasure ;
Love's the North Wind --
  And Man the dead leaf.

Text Authorship:

  • by Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie (1867 - 1906), as John Oliver Hobbes, "Love is a bubble", appears in A Study in Temptation

2. The sun is low  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
I sit and wait for you, Dear, my Dear,
Now the sun is low;
From the far-off town the path runs clear,
And the way you know --
The old, old way that brought you here,
In the Long-Ago.

The white moon climbs, and looks at me --
Her smile is cold;
Something she sees that I do not see --
The moon is old.

I catch a sigh from the winds that flee
Across the wold --
What is the secret they hide from me? --
They have not told.

To Lethe-country your steps were set --
Did you taste that spring
That makes the heart of a man forget
The dearest thing?

Nay! I sit and wait for you, Dear, my Dear,
For the sun is low --
From your far-off place the path runs clear,
And you still must know
The old, old way that brought you here
In the Long-Ago.

Text Authorship:

  • by Louise Chandler Moulton (1835 - 1908), "The sun is low", appears in At the Wind's Will: Lyrics and Sonnets
