Ur svunna dagars grav,
ur årens mörka klyfta
jag hör, när kvällen somnar av,
ett ensamt hjärta snyfta.

Mitt eget hjärtas röst,
vill du med drömmar skrämma?
Du ropar ur mitt bröst
och dock med fjärran stämma.

Jag snidar på en bild
av andras bragd och smärta.
Sjunk, tysta afton, klar och mild,
och väck mig inte, hjärta!
