Wenn der Tag sich neiget, 
jedes Vöglein schweiget, 
und das Abendglökchen klingt, 
hat es ein so schön Bedeuten, 
wenn man bei dem Glockenläuten 
auch ein Abendliedchen singt. 

Stille sinkt aus Lüften 
nieder auf die Triften, 
und nur noch das Heimchen wacht, 
und im Tannendunkel flötet 
bis der Ost sich wieder röthet 
Nachtigall die ganze Nacht.  

Dunkel sich ergießet, 
und rings Alles schließet 
bald die müden Augen zu, 
doch, wo's liebe Mondlicht schimmert, 
und die Schaar der Sterne flimmert, 
schützen Engel unsre Ruh'. 

Und bin frühe wieder 
durch der Vöglein Lieder 
ich gesund und froh erwacht, 
sing' ich eine muntre Weise, 
Gott dem Herrn zum Lob und Preise, 
der mich schützte in der Nacht.
