Was hat der Hahn gekräht?
Den Morgen.
Sag' an, o Herz,
Voll Leid und Schmerz,
Was dir den Tag verräth? --
Die Sorgen.

Die Sorgen sind mein Hahn,
Der flattert,
Wenn es nur graut,
Kein Vöglein laut,
Da fängt der Hahn schon an
Und gattert.

Lieb' hat ein Hähnlein roth
Und munter,
Das kräht, wenn fern
Geht Stern an Stern
Still in das Morgenroth
Hinunter.

Leid hat ein Hähnlein grau,
Wie's meine.
Mein Ohr es traf
Im tiefen Schlaf,
Ich schau ins Morgengrau
Und weine.

Frau Holle fährt im Dorf herum --
Schnurre, Rädchen, schnurre!

Weist ihr den Weg zu jedem Haus,
Daß sie die flinksten findet aus --
Schnurre, Rädchen, schnurre!

Bemerkt sie wo noch [einen]2 Schein,
Frau Holle hält und schaut hinein,
Die munter drehn, belohnt sie fein --
Schnurre, Rädchen, schnurre!

Note (provided by Johann Winkler): On Santa Barbara's day (December 4th), the custom in parts of Germany and Austria was to cut small branches from cherry trees and put them into water; if they blossomed on Christmas eve (as they usually did), that would be considered a good omen for the following year; unwed young women especially might identify different branches with eligible young men and expect the one whose branch blossomed first to marry them the following year.
