Alles still in süßer Ruh,
Drum, mein Kind, so schlaf auch du!
Draußen säuselt nur der Wind:
Su, susu! schlaf ein, mein Kind!

[Schließ du]1 deine Äugelein,
Laß sie wie zwei Knospen sein!
Morgen, wenn die Sonn' erglüht,
Sind sie wie die Blum' erblüht.

Und die Blümlein schau' ich an,
Und die Äuglein küss' ich dann,
Und der Mutter Herz vergißt,
Daß es draußen Frühling ist.

Confirmed with Kinderlieder von Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Erste vollständige Ausgabe besorgt durch Dr. Lionel von Donop, Zweite Auflage, Berlin, G. Grote'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1878, pages 26-27.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the word "Äugelein" becomes "Aeugelein", but as can be seen in how "über" becomes "Ueber" when capitalized, this is due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography, so we use "Äugelein".

7. Der Mutter Grab  [sung text not yet checked]

Dort unter den schattigen Linden,
Wo frische Blumen blüh'n,
Ruht aus eine gute Mutter
Von ihres Lebens Müh'n.

Sie sieht nicht ihre Kinder,
Sie ahnt nicht unsern Schmerz;
Geschlossen ist ihr Auge,
Und ruhig bleibt ihr Herz.

Mit jedem Frühling werden
Die Linden wieder grün,
Und an dem Grabeshügel
Die Blumen wieder blüh'n.

Dann blicken die Linden und Blumen
Gar fröhlich himmelwärts,
Doch unsern Blick beugt nieder
Zum Grabe tief der Schmerz.
