Vier liederen

Song Cycle by Johan Weegenhuise (b. 1910)

1. Zomeravond  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Naar bloemen ruikt de tuin en fruit,
Het veld naar ’t versche hooi.
Het volk komt traag de huizen uit.
Het weer is stil en mooi.

Ze zitten wippend met hun stoel
Te praten voor de deur.
Hun woorden gaan bedaard en koel
Om ’t alledaagsch gebeur.

En dikwijls is hun zwijgen zwaar
En zegt hun knikken veel.
Ze staren de avond in, en naar
Het donker op den deel,

Waar rammelend een koe zich roert
Al schuddend met haar kop.
Dan zijn hun oogen zacht ontroerd
En moeizaam staan ze op.

De jongens liggen sterk en moe
In ’t gras en kijken fel.
Ze lachen alle meisjes toe
En fluiten driest en schel.

Tot een harmonica hun wee
Op zoete deunen stemt.
Tevreden neuren allen mee,
Bewogen en getemd.

Dan gaan ze loom hun ouders na,
De deuren klappen dicht.
Het moede leven slaapt weldra.
De hemel is nog licht.
