Die Nacht ist gar zu dunkel
Und durch mein Zimmer zieht
Der Fliederduft, wie ein süßes, 
Trauriges Liebeslied.

Ich hab das Beten vergessen,
Die Bitten weiß ich nicht.
Immer schmeichelt der weiche
Duft um mein Gesicht.

Ich sitze wach im Dunkeln
Und weine vor mich hin,
Zitterend und ganz verstohlen,
Weil ich so einsam bin.

Ich hörte heute morgen am Klippenhang die Stare schon,
sie sangen wie daheim, und doch war es ein andrer Ton,
Und blaue Veilchen blühten auf allen Hägeln bis zur See.
In meiner Heimat Feldern liegt in den Furchen noch der Schnee.
In meiner Stadt im Norden stehn sieben Brücken, grau und greis,
an ihre morschen Pfähle treibt dumpf und schütternd jetzt das Eis.
Und über graue Wolken es fein und engelslieblich klingt.
Und meiner Heimat Kinder verstehen, was die erste Lerche singt.
