Two Short Songs

Song Cycle by Frances Allitsen (1848 - 1912)

1. Love and Grief ‑‑ Nature and Art  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
Before I looked upon the face of Grief,
Yea, long before Love ever came to bring it,
I wrote a little song of Love and Grief,--
But it was Love and Grief taught me to sing it.

Text Authorship:

  • by William Theodore Peters (1862 - ?), "Nature and Art", appears in Posies out of Rings and Other Conceits, London: John Lane; New York: George H. Richmond and Co., page 77, first published 1896

2. The mountain and the star  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
Once a Mountain loved a Star,
Loved a Star and loved her only.
For a night the Star shone down
On the Mountain bare and brown;
Then, at dawn of "little day,"
Very softly slipped away.

All great mountain heights are lonely.
