Die Sonne brannte heiß am Tage, Nun wird es auf den Abend kühl, Die Wolken ziehn in dunkler Lage, Und durch die Luft weht Harfenspiel. Mir ist so eigen, ist so trübe, Mein Herz strebt in die Ferne fort! Es denkt an seine alte Liebe Und sinnt auf eine verloren Wort. Umsonst! Ich werd´ ihn nimmer finden, Den Spruch, der Seelen binden mag, Warum auch gab ich ihn den Winden, Da er auf meinen Lippen lag! Ach! Immer finstrer wird der Schatten; Ich steh´ allein in öder Nacht, Und keine Stätte harrt des Matten, Und niemand ist, der mit mir wacht.
