Ich weilte in der Liebe Au'n,
wo wir nur Paradiese schau'n;
dies alles schwand wie Wellenschaum,
das Leben ist ja nur ein Traum!

Mir strahlte Hoffnung Sonnenglanz,
die Stirn umwand ein Blumenkranz
ihr Stern verglomm im Wolkensaum;
das Leben ist ja nur ein Traum!

Die Frühlingstage schwanden schnell dahin,
und Schmerz und Wehmut trübten meinen Sinn.
Entblättert steht der Liebe Myrtenbaum;
wohl ist das Leben nur ein Traum!

Es ist ein Traum; wenn einst die Sonne sinkt,
das Herz nicht mehr aus Sehnsucht Wonne trinkt,
dann flüstert's tröstend aus dem Sternenraum:
Das Leben war ja nur ein Traum!
