Die Rosen zerstreute der herbstliche Wind
in alle Ecken und Enden;
wer weiß, wohin sie gekommen sind?
Es trug sie der Wind ja so rauh und geschwind
aus meinen zitternden Händen.

Entfloh'n ist er, mein ganzes Glück,
vom gastlichen lieben Herde;
kein liebend Herz, das ihm tröstend lacht,
kein liebend Aug', das über ihn wacht,
steht bei ihm auf fremder Erde!

Wo er jetzt ist, mein ganzes Glück?
O könnt' ich ihn doch warnen!
Zu viel der Rosen blüh'n auf der Erd',
und jede ist des Pflückens wert;
sie werden ihn sicher umgarnen!
