Feuchte Mauern, dunkle Schatten,
Auch nicht einen Mondesstrahl! 
Auf der Steine harten Matten
Lieg' ich schlaflos ew'ge Qual. 

Hat denn Schlummer mich umfangen,
Hat mich süßer Schlaf erquickt?
S'ist entschwunden mein
Und mir ahnt der Freiheit Glück. 

Nicht kann ich die Sonne schauen,
Keine Luft umsäuselt mich;
Aber noch in Nacht und Grauen
Führle inn're Wärme ich. 

Ha! woher die Hoffnungsträume,
Ach, woher, ich frage nicht,
Nicht ergründ' ich ihre Räume, 
Noch begreife ich ihr Licht.
