Naar Svanen drømmende paa Strømmen bølger,
Da tænker jeg, min tause Ven, paa Dig,
Og paa den Drøm, som Du i Sjælen dølger,
Men som Du vist engang betroer til mig.

Naar Nattens Stjerner funkler i det Høie,
Da tænker jeg, mit skjulte Haab, paa Dig,
Og paa den Glands, der funkler i Dit Øie,
Og paa det Smiil, der har fortryllet mig.

Naar bleg og længselfuld sig Maanen hæver,
Da voxer end min Længsel efter Dig.
Naar som et Dødningskib den fremad svæver,
Da tænker jeg „kan Døden frelse mig?”

Thi gjerne vorder jeg med den fortrolig,
Hvis i dens Nat jeg skal gjenfinde Dig,
Men Himlen selv mig vorder Sorgens Bolig,
Hvis ei Du der forenes skal med mig.
