An deiner kleinen Wiege steh' ich 
Und horche, wie sich's drinnen regt,
In deine kleinen Züge seh' ich
Und lausche, wie dein Herze schlägt.

Wird es im Sturm, wird es im Frieden,
Durch dies bewegte Leben gehn? 
Das Schicksal, das dir einst beschieden,
Kein Blick der Liebe kann es sehn.

Und dennoch will ich fest vertrauen,
Denn Eines gab dir das Geschick:
Schon deine Kinderaugen schauen
Hinein in helles, volles Glück.

Nie fühlt' ich so mit tiefster Wonne 
Das selige Beisammensein,
Und dies Gefühl ist deine Sonne,
Und dieser Segen ist auch dein.

Der gute Engel, der vor Jahren 
Die Arme schützend schlang um mich,
Er wird auch dich dem Heil bewahren,
Sein Mutterauge hütet dich.
