O wär' es blos der Wange Pracht, Die mit den Jahren flieht! Doch das ist's, was mich traurig macht, Daß auch das Herz verblüht; Daß, wie der Jugend Ruf verhallt Und wie der Blick sich trübt, Die Brust, die einst so heiß gewallt, Vergißt, wie sie geliebt. Ob von der Lippe dann auch kühn Sich Witz und Scherz ergießt, 's ist nur ein heuchlerisches Grün, Das über Gräbern sprießt. Die Nacht kommt, mit der Nacht der Schmerz Der eitle Flimmer bricht; Nach Thränen sehnt sich unser Herz Und findet Thränen nicht. Wir sind so arm, wir sind so müd', Warum, wir wissen's kaum; Wir fühlen nur, das Herz verblüht, Und alles Glück ist Traum.
