by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547 - 1616)
Translation by Peter Anthony Motteux (1663 - 1718)

Marinero soy de amor
Language: Spanish (Español)
-Marinero soy de amor,
y en su piélago profundo
navego sin esperanza
de llegar a puerto alguno.
Siguiendo voy a una estrella
que desde lejos descubro,
más bella y resplandeciente
que cuantas vio Palinuro.
Yo no sé adónde me guía,
y así, navego confuso,
el alma a mirarla atenta,
cuidadosa y con descuido.
Recatos impertinentes,
honestidad contra el uso,
son nubes que me la encubren
cuando más verla procuro.
¡Oh clara y luciente estrella,
en cuya lumbre me apuro!;
al punto que te me encubras,
será de mi muerte el punto.

Muleteer's serenade
 (Sung text for setting by E. Elgar)
 Matches original text
Language: English  after the Spanish (Español)
Toss'd in doubts and fears I rove
On the stormy seas of love;
Far from comfort, far from port,
Beauty's prize, and fortune's sport;
Yet my heart disdains despair
While I trace my leading-star.

But reservedness, like a cloud,
Does too oft her glories shroud.
Pierce to the gloom, reviving light!
Be auspicious as you're bright.
As you hide or dart your beams,
Your adorer sinks or swims!

Composition:

    Set to music by Edward Elgar, Sir (1857 - 1934), "Muleteer's serenade", 1894 [ voice and piano ]
