Ishtar
 (Sung text for setting by C. Spross)
 Matches base text
Language: English
Deep in the heart of heaven the stars now wake,
The cool night winds a tender music make;
And here beneath the golden stars am I;
Ishtar! I wait to hear thy steps draw nigh.

Ishtar! above Assyrian plains too soon
Will fade the splendour of this rising moon,
And all too brief the beauty of the light
Of stars that weave a magic round the night.

Ishtar! more glorious than the stars thine eyes;
Thy voice more sweet than songs of breeze that rise
To fill the night with happy melody;
Come forth, belov'd, and speak thy words to me!

    Set to music by Charles Gilbert Spross (1874 - 1961), "Ishtar", subtitle: "An Assyrian Love Song", published 1911, copyright © 1911 [ voice and piano ], Cincinnati: The John Church Company
