Ljuset flämtar i staken matt;
snart skall det slockna, mitt röda ljus.
Över nejden sjunker den mörka natt,
med stormfågelvingars sus.
Ljuset flämtar i staken skyggt;
natten stryper mitt röda ljus.
Mörkret lägger sig tungt och styggt
kring mitt tysta, sovande hus.
Ljuset har brunnit i staken ned.
Kring mitt hem håller natten vakt,
men i skrämsel jag såg, hur lågan stred
mot det hungriga mörkrets makt.
