Wie würden mir die schönsten Freuden winken,
In welches Meer von Wonne würd' ich sinken,
Wie hätt' ich frischen Lebensmuth,
Würd' ich gleich sanften, holden Himmels Chören,
Von deinen Lippen diese Worte hören:
Du bist mein Freund, ich bin und bleib' dir gut.

Es sollte niemals dich gereuen,
Ich würde dir die reinste Treue weihen,
So fliesse hin der Jahre Fluth,
Geschworen sei's bei Gott dem ewig Wahren,
Sprichst du dereinst, vielleicht nach vielen Jahren:
Du warst mein Freund, ich bin und bleib' dir gut.

Die Vorsicht mag in meinem ganzen Leben,
Mir nichts von Glück und anderm Wohlsein geben,
Wenn sie nur Dir stets Gutes thut,  
Und meinen Tod mag einst kein Mensch beklagen,
wirst du alsdann nur einmal von mir sagen:
Er war mein Freund, ich war und blieb ihm gut.
