Un homme fini

Le soir, il promène, à travers la pluie 
   et le danger nocturne, son ombre informe  
   et tout ce qui l’a fait amer.
À la première rencontre, il tremble — 
   où se réfugier contre le désespoir ?
Une foule rôde dans le vent qui torture les branches, 
   et le Maître du ciel le suit d’un œil terrible.
Une enseigne grince — la peur. Une porte bouge 
   et le volet d’en haut claque contre le mur ; 
   il court et les ailes qui emportaient l’ange noir l’abandonnent.
Et puis, dans les couloirs sans fin, 
   dans les champs désolés de la nuit, 
   dans les limites sombres où se heurte l’esprit, 
   les voix imprévues traversent les cloisons, 
   les idées mal bâties chancellent, 
   les cloches de la mort équivoque résonnent.
