by Joseph von Geiger

Ich kenne eine Fahne
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich kenne eine Fahne,
der einst ich Treue schwur
und stets als Feldcumpane
gefolgt bin auf der Spur.
Ich hab' für sie gestritten
so manche heiße Schlacht
und in der Kampfesmitten
sie felsenfest bewacht.

Und viele tiefe Wunden
hab' ich für sie empfah'n,
wenn Feinde mich umstunden,
manch festen Hieb getan.
Und soll ich einst zu Tode,
ich lasse nicht von ihr,
sie weh' im Abendrote
am Grab mir als Panier.

Note: the text comes from a copy of a manuscript found in Rheinberger's family archive. It contained some mistakes in orthography and punctuation that have been corrected.
