Le mauvais ouvrier

Maître Laurent Coster, coeur plein de poésie, 
Quitte les compagnons qui du matin au soir, 
Vignerons de l’esprit, font gémir le pressoir; 
Et Coster va rêvant selon sa fantaisie. 
Car il aime d’amour le démon Aspasie. 
Sur son banc, à l’église, il va parfois s’asseoir, 
Et voit flotter dans la vapeur de l’encensoir 
La dame de l’enfer que son âme a choisie;
 
Ou bien encor, tout seul au bord d’un puits mousseux, 
Joignant ses belles mains d’ouvrier paresseux, 
Il écoute sans fin la sirène qui chante. 
Et je ne sais non plus travailler ni prier; 
Je suis, comme Coster, un mauvais ouvrier, 
À cause des beautés d’une femme méchante.
